Receiving SMS
Clients can receive inbound Mobile Originated (MO) SMS using HSL's 'Virtual Mobile Number', 'Virtual SIM Hosting' or 'SIM Card Hosting' services using the SMTP, SMPP or HTTP interfaces. Please note that HSL do not charge for SMS messages received from mobiles.
Virtual Mobile Numbers
The "Virtual Mobile" solution brings high performance with low message latency using our UK and other country Virtual Mobile Numbers. A single number allows an application to receive incoming SMS from all UK networks, and all other supported networks worldwide. The Virtual Mobile Numbers behave in the same manner as a regular mobile number, but with the benefit of significantly higher throughput (20-50 SMS per second) to your application.
Virtual Mobile Numbers are compatible with each of our supported interfaces - SMPP, HTTP and SMTP (email) as described in the Sending SMS section. A diagram of a virtual mobile number in operation is available here. Please note that Virtual Mobile Numbers can also be termed MSISDN numbers or long numbers.
Timestamp: When using the SMPP interface and certain VMN ranges that we provide, the exact time the SMS was sent by the mobile subscriber can be received.

Virtual Mobile Numbers are charged monthly by each continuous block of numbers. Costs are in addition to the Advanced Services account charges. VMNs are available from the UK's mobile numbering plan (e.g. 07797882999 / +447797882999).
Virtual SIM Hosting
"Virtual SIM Hosting" provides a high performance method of receiving up to 50 SMS per second through a customer-supplied SIM. The mobile number of the SIM can be used to receive SMS without the restrictions of normal SIM card hosting. This service supports approximately 200 mobile networks worldwide and is a means of getting the performance of Virtual Mobile Numbers (VMNs) with the advantage of a national mobile number (e.g. a SIM from a mobile network in France for use with a service targeted at mobile users in France).

SIM Card Hosting
Receiving incoming SMS from mobiles on different networks using a SIM hosted by HSL allows the client to provide a mobile number of their choice. SIMs are monitored 24x7 and, while not technically superior to the "Virtual Mobile" solution, are hosted in specialised equipment on HSL's premises and are suitable for low volume traffic applications.
