Utilities

SMS provides multiple remote monitoring opportunities for utility organisations. Using SMS in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications to obtain telemetry data is just one way in which utilities are benefitting from mobile technology. SMS telemetry solutions can simplify the data collection process as companies would install the technology at the remote site and then evaluate the information as and when it arrives, thus eliminating the need to visit the remote location each time data is required. For example, facilities such as water or electricity meters can be remotely monitored and any data collected from the meters would then be automatically relayed back to the utility company by SMS.

Utility companies can also use SMS for communicating with customers such as alerting them to when an engineer will be at their premises, in addition to communicating jobs and status updates with employees.

Additionally alerting engineers of any issues, or potential problems, is a crucial use for SMS text messaging.
