SMS text messaging has been deployed by numerous public sector authorities. Local councils can increase and enhance communications with people living within their council area through SMS.

Examples of how councils use SMS include:

	Reminding people of holiday bin collections.
	Promoting community campaigns.
	Managing staff communications more efficiently.

	Receiving reports and information on roads, footpaths and street furniture from members of the public.

SMS can also be used within other areas of the public sector, for instance, within housing associations in order to assist with building maintenance and tenant advice. This has been known to reduce the cost of communicating with the public and also to increase response rates and awareness.
